Back for the 12th year, The Music Center’s Dance DTLA kicks off THIS Friday night, June 3! Head downtown for an evening of dancing under the stars on most Friday nights from June-September, 2016. Whether your the best singer at karaoke or can’t carry a tune to save your life, all levels are welcome to join us tonight at our annual Holiday Sing-Along. We’ll be belting out a bevy of Christmas classics with live accompaniment (and a song leader, to help you stay on pitch) from 6:30-8pm tonight on our beautifully decorated plaza.
Gather under the glow of our holiday tree and sing along with family and friends! The event is totally free, but seating is limited, so we recommend you head over early. Ticket distribution will begin at 6pm.
Ugly holiday sweaters are not required, but always encouraged! 😉 Hope to see you there!
The Very Special Arts Festival is one of our absolute favorites events. It’s our annual event celebrating the artistic achievements of students with disabilities and their mainstream peers. This year marks the 37th year of the festival and tomorrow, Friday, October 23, our plaza is going to be packed with children, teachers, and performers partaking.
The festival features student and professional performances on two stages, visual and performing arts workshops, and a student art exhibit created around a central theme of Making Connections. Presented in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District and the Los Angeles County Office of Education, the Very Special Arts Festival is free to the public and open to all grade levels.
If you’re in the area, come by and check it out from 9:30am to 1pm. It is guaranteed to warm your heart and bring a smile to your face! You can also catch pics and videos on our social channels by searching #VSAF15.
It’s no secret that downtown LA’s Grand Avenue has been a cultural hub for some time now. But with the addition of The Broad Museum this past month, along with the slew of new restaurants, events and apartments opening up, Grand Avenue is brimming over with vibrancy right now. So it seemed only fitting that all of the artistic organizations on the avenue take a moment to collectively open all our doors and celebrate all the incredible art and culture happening on Grand Ave all the time!
This Saturday, join us for Grand Ave Arts: All Access – Los Angeles’ home for world-class arts and culture turns inside out with open rehearsals, architecture tours, museum exhibitions, performances, food and drink, and kids film screenings. It’s all free, open to all ages, and includes all the arts organizations from 5th Street to Temple.
Activities for The Music Center include …
+ Performances on our plaza by Xoyocote Azteca dance company.
+ Día de los Muertos art installations as part of a wide-scale project that includes Grand Park.
+ Día de los Muertos-themed face painting and Papel Picado workshops featuring guest artists Alvaro Asturias and Xochitl Palomera in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion lobby.
+ Tours of our oldest theater, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, every 30 minutes beginning at 11:00 a.m. Last tour leaves at 1:30 p.m.
Visit the Grand Ave Arts: All Access website for a full rundown of activities for the day, and be sure to grab your friends and family to take in all the amazing things happening in the heart of Los Angeles’ cultural scene!
BYODM stands for “bring your own dance moves” and on June 12th that’s precisely what Los Angeles did! Part of our Summer @ The Music Center Friday night series of free activities, BYODM alternates with our tried & true series of free dance lessons on the plaza, Dance Downtown, and features headlining DJ’s like Peanut Butter Wolf, Egyptian Lover, Adrian Younge, Garth Trinidad, and Heidi Lawden… just to name a few.
The evening is a simple combination of good tunes, good food, good friends, summer nights and sweet dance moves! We also have teamed up with SPiN Standard to offer ping-pong tables for any of you who fancy a game or two! The result is something everyone can enjoy, from the best breakers to the most modest of movers… It’s just about having a good time with your friends in DTLA! Just have a look at all the amazing photos from the last BYODM night….
Our next BYODM is this Friday, June 26th, so put it in your calendars and plan to meet us on the plaza from 7-11pm! Remember to take advantage of our Destination Discount if you’re planning on taking the Metro (highly recommended!) And to be sure you have enough sustenance for a full evening on getting your boogie on, stop by Grand Central Market on your way over and stock up on a few of our favorite eats like Belcampo Meat Co, Ana Maria, or DTLA Cheese.
This Friday is Samba Night at Dance Downtown and it needs no introduction. The moves are sexy, the music is awesome, and dancing samba is just plain fun! If you’re coming out to join us, let us know on our Facebook Event page and also keep an eye out for some carnival-style props hitting the photo booth this Friday!
And as always, stop by the info table to enter to win some amazing prizes – A picnic basket from Artisan House LA, tickets to see Caetano Veloso at the Hollywood Bowl, and tickets to an evening with Gilberto Gil at Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA.
So bust out your best feathered head-dress and well see you on the dance floor!
Motown, The Stooges, KISS and The White Stripes – There’s no denying that there has been some incredible music from the Motor City over the years! This year we’re going to celebrate it with our 1st Friday Night Sing Along event of the summer – The Detroit Sound.
Gather your favorite, musically-inclined friends and meet us at the W.M. Keck Amphitheater behind Walt Disney Concert Hall, this Friday, June 20th from 6:30-8pm. Then be ready to sing along to all the Detroit hits like Superstition and Mustang Sally! The event is free and open to all ages, but space is limited, so get here early if you want a good spot.
And because Friday still feels like a ways away, here’s a playlist of tunes to get you in the mood….Enjoy!
