Back for the 12th year, The Music Center’s Dance DTLA kicks off THIS Friday night, June 3! Head downtown for an evening of dancing under the stars on most Friday nights from June-September, 2016. Plus, grab some yummy specials for your picnic basket at Grand Central Market’s extended Summer Nights hours and hop on the free Downtown Concierge Shuttle over to The Music Center!
Ok, so there is actually no ticket involved with our Summer Friday night events – “Bring Your Own Dance Moves” (BYODM) and Dance Downtown, which alternate every Friday and are both free, fun and fantastic for everyone. Never the less, we’ve put together a few helpful hints you may find useful when heading out to dance the night away with us! Let’s get right to it…
Tip 1: Parking goes down to $5 after 8pm.
Parking is always an issue in downtown LA, but if you enter The Music Center’s parking lots (there’s one under the plaza with the entrance on Grand Ave. and another under Walt Disney Concert Hall, with the entrance on 2nd) after 8pm, it’s a $5 flat rate as opposed to the usual $9.
Tip 2: At 8pm a new bar menu is available at Pinot Grill on the plaza.
Wings, Flatbread, Sliders and Veggie Spring Rolls…. The Pinot Grill bar, located on the plaza, has the perfect selection of light bites to keep you going through the night. Plus a myriad of refreshing summer cocktails, wine and beer all at a special late night price. Only available after 8pm.
Tip 3: At BYODM, you can snag a free pair of pineapple sunglasses!
It’s true. All you have to do is visit our info table, located to the south of the DJ stage, and show that you’re following The Music Center on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and BOOM. Sunnies are yours!
Tip 4: $25 gets you access to our Member Lounge for the whole summer, and a 1-time free parking voucher!
Enjoy your own reserved space to sit, relax and have a drink with friends. Perfect when you need to rest your dancing feet and there are no other free seats around. Plus, your $25 is a donation to The Music Center that will help us continue to program events like these summer Friday dance parties. It’s a win win! Click here to pay in advance.
That’s it for now! Check out all our Ticket Tricks posts to get the most out of your time at The Music Center and happy dancing!

BalletBoyz is one of the most cheekily original and innovative forces in modern dance and has thrilled audiences and critics the world over with its distinctive style marked by muscularity, ferocity, as well as tremendous grace and elegance. The Guardian describes it as “a paradox of muscular impact and weightless flight.”
If you were a child of the nineties, you may get sentimental when you hear the sweet sounds of TLC, or the iconic chords of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. You may recall how you wore out your Doc Martins, never made a move without your flannel shirt, sported a mini backpack, denim vests and proudly wore overalls well after the age of 10. (All of these fashion trends seem to have currently come back in style BTW.) You had a walkman, rollerblades and even a secret Pog collection.
You remember when Friday’s meant TGIF night on ABC. You often found yourself saying “Whatever” and “As If” a la Clueless. The only reality TV you watched was Mtv’s The Real World, and you remember staying up late to watch ‘the 10 spot.’ You mastered all the moves of the decade – the running man, the roger rabbit, the dip, the carlton, the tootsie-roll, and the cabbage-patch. Those were some good times, huh?
Well whether you lived through it or not, we’re throwing it back to the nineties this Friday night at Dance Downtown. Starting at 6:30 and going till 10pm, join us on the plaza for free dance lessons in the best moves of the decade, amazing tunes from the time, food, drinks, prizes and fun! #WeLoveThe90s
This Friday is Samba Night at Dance Downtown and it needs no introduction. The moves are sexy, the music is awesome, and dancing samba is just plain fun! If you’re coming out to join us, let us know on our Facebook Event page and also keep an eye out for some carnival-style props hitting the photo booth this Friday!
And as always, stop by the info table to enter to win some amazing prizes – A picnic basket from Artisan House LA, tickets to see Caetano Veloso at the Hollywood Bowl, and tickets to an evening with Gilberto Gil at Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA.
So bust out your best feathered head-dress and well see you on the dance floor!
This Friday’s Dance Downtown is K-Pop! That’s right friends, I said K-POP! The hallyu is heading to The Music Center plaza from 6:30-10pm this Friday and will feature dance moves taught by Aimee Lee Lucas, and sets by DJ Cy with all your favorite k-pop tunes.
Whether you’re big into K-Pop or new to the hallyu (which refers to the wave of Korean culture sweeping the globe) we’ve put together a quick prep-list to get you ready for the fun….
1. Start with the music
Obviously, K-Pop wouldn’t be K-Pop without some really catchy, poppy tunes, and trust us, there are plenty to go around. Listen to our K-Pop Playlist below to acquaint yourself with a few of the most popular songs of the moment!
2. Dress the part
One of the other things we can’t help but love with the hallyu craze is all the great fashion that comes with it! Bright colors, snazzy sneakers, cool tees, and fun accessories are all must haves for the full K-Pop effect. Here’s a fashion mood board to get your style wheels spinning…
3. Keep it fun
It’s hard not to smile when listening to K-Pop, but here’s just a reminder – Like all good pop music, this genre and dance style is all about having fun. So when you’re taking the dance floor on Friday with your friends, don’t be afraid to drop your guard and free-style! Pretty much anything goes, but we will have our instructor there to lead you through some of the most popular moves. The only pre-requisite is a smile on your face!
See you at K-Pop Night!
For our very first Dance Downtown of the summer last friday (which also happened to be the 100th Dance Downtown ever) we added an element of fun with a make-shift photo booth using our banner and a slew of props and costumes.
The result? Shenanigans! Just see for yourself…
Be sure to check out our photo booth at future Dance Downtowns, to get a free snap of your own to cherish and share!
