Company Wayne McGregor’s Autobiography

The Music Center’s Ahmanson Theatre

British choreographer and director Wayne McGregor brings Company Wayne McGregor, his contemporary dance company, to Los Angeles with the new pieceAutobiography. McGregor fuses science and the human form to create a cycle of 23 choreographic portraits informed by the sequencing of his own genome. Prior to each performance, a computer algorithm selects from and determines the order of the 23 sections, making each performance as unique as DNA itself. Balanced with bold set design and large-scale projections synced to an electronic score, Autobiography interrogates the body as archive through genetics and movement.

Diavolo returns to The Music Center following its success as one of the top 10 finalists in season 12 of NBC’sAmerica’s Got Talent. The Los Angeles-based dance company continues to push a new edge of performance with Artistic Director Jacques Heim’s inventive genius and his fearless, athletic daredevils. The program will include Diavolo’s signature work Trajectoire and the California premiere of Voyage, featuring meticulously designed architectural structures that have become the company’s hallmark. With a style that encompasses modern dance, acrobatics and gymnastics, Diavolo uses dance to explore the relationship between the human body and its architectural environment.

The Music Center brings back the best holiday tradition to Los Angeles with George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker®by Miami City Ballet. Balanchine’s iconic choreography and Tchaikovsky’s timeless score are paired with whimsical sets and costumes by Cuban-American artists Isabel and Ruben Toledo. The classic repertoire is presented with the impressive scale of more than 100 dancers and cast members, along with live orchestra, fully bringing to life the magic and spectacle that have delighted audiences for generations.

For 60 years, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has embodied these complexities and contradictions of the human condition with dance performances that uplift and transform, making the company one of the world’s most beloved. Offering an homage to traditional modern dance techniques blended with the new, the Ailey company will perform three different programs of mixed repertory with classic Ailey works and contemporary masterworks. Each program will culminate with the soulful American masterpiece Revelations.

The Royal Ballet’s Mayerling

The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

JUL 5 – JUL 7, 2019

The Royal Ballet returns to The Music Center with a tale of dangerous desires, family secrets and political intrigue. Based on the true story of the deaths in 1889 of Austro-Hungarian Crown Prince Rudolf and his teenage mistress Mary Vetsera, and set in the brilliant backdrop of the Viennese palace, Mayerling brings to life the vividly absorbing incident that shook the royal courts of the 19th century. This dark and intense ballet with live orchestra was first created for The Royal Ballet by Kenneth MacMillan in 1978. To this day, Mayerling is regarded by many as among MacMillan’s finest works.
