During a time where the future of #artseducation is unknown, The Music Center is proud to present a program like Spotlight, which encourages students to grow and learn outside the classroom. Whether or not the students pursue a career onstage, offstage or something outside of the arts, they walk away from Spotlight with brand new confidence and skills.
Spotlight is a nationally-acclaimed scholarship and arts training program for high school students in the performing arts. This past Tuesday, fourteen of Southern California’s most talented teens stepped onto the Walt Disney Concert Hall stage as the Grand Finale of our SPOTLIGHT 2017 program.
After months of auditions and master classes, this was their moment in the ‘spotlight’ after each winning a $5,000 scholarship to pursue their craft. Competing in seven categories (including ballet, jazz, and acting), these students beat out this year’s over 1,300 applicants.
This year’s Grand Prize Finalists are SAMUEL CHRISTIAN (Acting), CAMILLE UMOFF (Acting), JORDAN COUTTS (Ballet), LAUREN HUNTER (Ballet), AILEEN CHUNG (Classical Instrumental), VICTOR SHLYAKHTENKO (Classical Instrumental), JEANNINE BAUER (Classical Voice), NATHAN VASQUEZ (Classical Voice), ANNA ABONDOLO (Jazz Instrumental), WILLIAM BRANDT (Jazz Instrumental), SOPHIA FRILOT (Non-Classical Dance), TAYLOR KURTZ (Non-Classical Dance), JOSEPH SILVA (Non-Classical Voice), and BRIGHTON THOMAS (Non-Classical Voice).
Spotlight alumni are dancing with the world’s best dance companies, performing with top orchestras, jamming in the leading jazz clubs, singing in the leading opera houses, and starring on Broadway. In addition, they are top executives behind the scenes in art schools, institutions, and businesses.
The application for Spotlight 2018 opens in June. Don’t miss the opportunity of a lifetime! All Southern California high school students are encouraged to apply.
