It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly been a week since our Ahmanson Theatre was filled with the brilliantly surreal sets and movements of Tania Pérez-Salas Compañia de Danza!   The company made a wonderful LA debut and we want to thank everyone who came out for our master classes, performances, and post show lounges!  Here’s a quick photo recap of the company’s time here at The Music Center….

Dancers Sarah Matry-Guerre and Jairo Cruz made a quick sight-seeing stop at Dodger stadium after teaching a thrilling master class at EDGE Performing Arts Center in Hollywood….  You can see more pictures of the class on our Facebook page.

Desperately Seeking Salas

Let us introduce you to the creative force behind our upcoming dance engagement at The Music Center – Tania Pérez-Salas.

Born in Mexico City, Tania Pérez-Salas first obtained significant recognition in 1993 when she received the award for best female performer in the National Dance Competition of Mexico. Just one year later she founded Tania Pérez-Salas Compañía de Danza, which has since become unparalleled in the world of Mexican contemporary dance with tours throughout Mexico, the United States, Canada, South America, China, the Middle East, and Europe as well as numerous invitations to the world’s most prestigious dance festivals.

Pérez-Salas has fast become Mexico’s premiere contemporary choreographer with work based on universal themes, which she presents from unique angles. Her choreography is nourished by her love of movies, literature, visual arts and philosophy. Each work stems from a real-life experience and displays a unique quality that blends music, sets, costumes and lighting. Her dancers are highly trained professionals, equal to the task of successfully expressing the required blend of emotion and technique. The result on stage is captivating, visually arresting, and highly emotive work.

Both as a dancer and a choreographer Pérez-Salas has been awarded multiple contemporary dance fellowships from several cultural institutions in Mexico, as well as support from private enterprises. She has lectured in Mexico and abroad, served as a juror for prestigious arts awards in Mexico, and with her company represented Mexico in the CINARS 2002 conference in Montreal, and at Gateway to the Americas conferences in Mexico City in 2003 and 2004.

Since 2008, Ms. Perez-Salas has been the host and a member of the creative team for Juego de Cuerpos (Body Games), a television series featuring dance that is airing for its third season, now under the title Pasión en Movimiento (Movement in Passion) on Mexico’s Channel 22.

For her engagement at The Music Center, Perez-Salas brings a program featuring two of her more recent creations. Made in Mexico (Hecho en Mexico), 2014, reflects her perspective of contemporary Mexico with images that touch upon the universal and the controversial. Ex-Stasis, 2010, confronts modern life and the subsequent breakdown in communication between our bodies and our minds.

Get your tickets to see Tania Pérez-Salas Compañía de Danza at the Ahmanson May 15th – 17th!

This Week @MusicCenterLA

While Mother’s Day may be the most lovely highlight of this week, there’s also plenty happening here at The Music Center… even a few fine options on mom’s very own day!

World City closes it’s 14/15 season with Kùlú Mèlé African Dance and Drum Ensemble, featuring their Afro-Cuban repertoire with rhythms such as rumba and dances with roots in the Yoruba religion and another by way of the Congo. With elements of international Hip-Hop and audience participation, Kùlú Mèlé will bring the joyous celebration of Cuban Carnival to LA!

Center Theatre Group continues it’s run of Immediate Family  at the Mark Taper Forum, directed by Tony Award® winner Phylicia Rashad. In case you missed it, here’s a wonderful editorial piece on Rashad’s role from the LA Times.

LA Phil presents the brilliant French vocal and instrumental ensemble Les Arts Florissants who have been at the forefront of Baroque performance practice since 1979. The week continues with several performances boasting the powerhouse trio of talents Dudamel, Bronfman & Brahms featuring pre-concert talks with Eric Bromberger.

REDCAT continues with it’s second weekend of the REDCAT International Children’s Film Festival. On Friday and Saturday night enjoy CalArts’ Next Dance Company compiling the school’s most accomplished performers and choreographers from the 2015 graduating class. Mother’s Day at The Music Center!

Make a day at The Music Center the perfect gift for mom! Depending on what she’s into- we’ve got her day covered!

Is classical music her thing? If she can’t get enough of Gustavo Dudamel’s flailing curls as he conducts the LA Phil, then you’re in luck. With Dudamel, Bronfman & Brahms, let her swoon to the sweet tunes of Brahms with the enormous personality of Yefim Bronfman on the piano.

The Colburn School is offering free tickets for mothers (with code “mom”) for their Colburn Dance Academy Year-end Performance at the Ramon C. Cortines High School of Visual and Performing Arts Concert Hall on Grand Avenue. BONUS: Make it a gift that keeps on giving by getting her tickets to come back next week and see Tania Pérez-Salas Compañía de Danza at the Ahmanson.

Got little ones? If nothing make mom happier than seeing her babes smile, REDCAT continues it’s International Children’s Film Festival which is jam packed with delightful visual treats for all ages on Sunday afternoon.

Is mom more a theater person? If the kids are all grown and she can relate all to well to the TV show “Modern Family,” then maybe you should indulge her in Immediate Family playing at the Mark Taper Forum, and directed by Phylicia Rashad (AKA Claire Huxtable, arguably TV’s best mom!). Two showtimes on Sunday!

Does mom have a palate for the finer things? Consider making a brunch reservation with Patina where everyone can enjoy a special Mother’s Day Three-Course Prix-Fixe menu. There’s even a children’s price!MothersDay-Patina
