This Week @MusicCenterLA

With Mardis Gras just barely behind us, tomorrow rings in the Chinese New Year welcoming the year of the Wood Sheep (or Goat or Ram).  Depending on your own beliefs and superstitions, it could be a year of conflict, a year of success, maybe a little bit of both, but ultimately The Music Center will have you covered no matter what. Especially during this most eventful week!

This Sunday World City at The Music Center is excited to have the traditional Balinese Music & Dance group Gamelan Sekar Jaya, also known as “the finest Balinese gamelan ensemble outside of Indonesia” (TempoMagazine). The two performances at 11:00am & 12:30pm at the W.M. Keck Children’s Amphitheatre are FREE! While online reservations are currently closed, that doesn’t mean you can’t walk up on the day of for some first come first served tickets!

LA Opera continues its run of The Ghosts of Versailles, the delightful and enchanting opera within an opera, with two shows this week and just another two before it closes! Looking for a tempting teaser to push you over the edge? Look no further than here.

Center Theatre Group continues its run of the provocative and classic drama The Price at the Mark Taper Forum this week. Additionally there is still time to catch Dame Edna’s Glorious Goodbye The Farewell Tour at the Ahmanson Theatre.

Tonight the LA Phil presents an evening of Late Masterworks with András Schiff, where you can hear the Hungarian virtuoso play the late keyboard sonatas of Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. Then, from Thursday through Saturday the LA Phil presents three opportunities to experience Chinese New Year: From Tchaikovsky to Tan Dun. Each evening not only boats an eclectic and carefully curated production of East blending with West, but also concludes with traditional Chinese New Year festivities ranging from dragon & lion dancing, to beer tasting and calligraphy in the Walt Disney Concert Hall. (Remember, we’re just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Chinatown if you’re looking to keep the New Year festivities rolling!)

REDCAT continues their run of Mariano Pensotti: Cineastas. This not-to-be-missed split screen set of life and art has showtimes through Saturday. Catch this conceptually woven together “filmic drama” before it’s gone!
